Uche Ignites Comfortable Palace Triumph at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite entering their maiden continental campaign, Crystal Palace are learning very quickly. Without key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a commanding result that all but guarantees them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
A further three points in their upcoming match against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight passage to the knockout stages, particularly after a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Opportunity
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a clinical goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second game in match.
The Shelbourne team that had concluded their league season were outmatched even for a mostly rotated Palace outfit. The visitors were further depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee problems.
Control Asserted from the Outset
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A slick move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close soon after, fizzing a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the official waved away the appeals.
The formerArsenal striker did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's shot had struck the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for a couple of agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Contest
The contest was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
