This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like conventional physical horror, but within Together exists a profound contemplation about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that come with any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
