Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage to the country annually.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
