Crew Member Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also carried celebrity crewmates.
The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a public message, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her studies and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.
She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since achieving her goal, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She concluded that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The computer-piloted spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the edge of space.
